PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This piece by Congolese artist Lukau Cojack is one of the collections we brought back from our trip to Kinshasa after visiting the ‘Marché des Valeurs’ (The Market of Values) in the city.

The “Marche des Valeurs”, also referred to as “Le Marche des Artistes” (The Market of Artists), or “The Marché des Voleurs” (The Thieves’ Market) due to the prices they offer to tourists, is a renowned ‘not-to-be-missed’ landmark for arts and crafts in Congo.

During our visit, we met Emmanuel Awanga, from whom we also bought a beautiful piece currently decorating our walls. He walked us through his paintings and those of his colleagues who were not on shift that day. “Figures” was one of them and it was picked by us because of the beautiful representation of a community. This may appear as a ‘simple’ painting but to us well epitomises the strong values of community and sharing existing in many African cultures.

Emmanuel shared with us what it was like to be an artist in Congo, and how his passion for art is not a choice, but an integral part of his own life. Read Emmanuel’s story here.
